It’s been a busy few weeks at our Porthcawl Metro Link project with the steel frame being erected and the commencement of roofing works. Well done to our project team and supply chain who have certainly witnessed some windy conditions at Porthcawl sea front!
Additionally, as part of our ‘Leaving a Legacy’ programme, we have made four donations to support local charities that are vital for the community and visitors to Porthcawl. All the charities support local health and wellbeing, alongside keeping people safe in the seaside community. It has been great to meet with them all and find out more about the amazing work they have been doing within Porthcawl community.
ABOUT THE COMMUNITY GROUPS:
Porthcawl Lifeguard Club – the ethos of the club is, as well as keeping fit, is to instil knowledge on beach and sea safety, first aid and life support. As club members live so close to the sea, it is vital that children learn about all aspects of the dangers open water can bring and how to be safe. Our donation will help purchase transition boards for the club to support the younger members of the club with training and progression.
Rest Bay Surf Lifesaving Club – main aim is to provide users of Rest Bay with the best possible lifeguard service. They provide volunteer patrols of the beach and train members (age 7 up) in lifesaving skills in order to gain lifesaving awards. During busy periods they support the RNLI lifeguard service. This donation will support the purchase of training kit for nippers, who are aged 7 to 13 to go away to camp next summer where they will learn valuable lifesaving skills.
Porthcawl RNLI – as part of the Porthcawl Lifeboat Water Safety Lifesaving Plan, the RNLI have identified 2 major risks which they are looking to mitigate by an innovative project, which is the introduction and use of Interactive Electronic wall mounted signs. To that end they are looking to secure 2 interactive signs, and associated software for Rest Bay, and Porthcawl Lifeboat Station (our donation will support with the purchase of these signs). The signs will provide a scrolling warning and safety advice, advising surfers, swimmers etc of the dangers of tides and hazards. They hope to have the Electronic interactive signs in place in readiness for early next year.
Rewild Play – has been working alongside Coney Surf for many years and numerous children and their families have benefited from these sessions. They regularly have 20 children attend each session, where they build on their surfing skills, confidence in the water, self-esteem, and their physical and mental wellbeing. They are in a safe, non-judgemental space being given the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Our donation will help support the purchase of Christmas hampers for the families.
